DOVER

By the time of the Civil War, Dover (the county seat of Stewart County) had become the second largest steamboat port on the Cumberland River.  The area was well know for its early iron industry as well as a strong agricultural base.  Controlled by Union forces after the fall of Fort Donelson in 1862, it was burned to prevent capture by Confederate raider N. B. Forrest.
