USS Cincinnati


USS Cincinnati [Naval Historical Center, NH 63211]



Cincinnati was a "city" class ironclad, built at Mound City, Illinois, and commissioned in January 1862.  She participated in the capture of Fort Henry in February 1862.  On May 10, she was rammed during the engagement near Fort Pillow, sinking in shallow water.

After repair, she patrolled the Mississippi and other rivers throughout the rest of the war.  She was decommissioned in August 1865.
