USS Carondelet


USS Carondelet [Naval Historical Center, NH 63376]



Carondelet was a "city" class ironclad, built at Carondelet (near St. Louis), Missouri, and commissioned in January 1862.  She participated in the capture of Fort Henry and Fort Donelson in February, in the engagement near Fort Pillow in May, and in the battle of Memphis in June 1862.

Her later career took place outside of Tennessee.  She survived the war and was decommissioned in June 1865.
