Historic
Southern Indiana(HSI)
is a heritage-based regional outreach program of
the University of Southern Indiana, serving the
southern 26 counties of Indiana since 1986. Its
goals are to identify, preserve, enhance, and
promote the historical and natural resources of the
region. HSI was one of the 16 pilot programs of the
National Trust for Historic Preservation's heritage
tourism initiative, 1990-1993. Services and
programs related to heritage education include
annual workshops and symposia designed to enhance
the quality of services at historic sites and
museums and the linkages between the classroom and
these sites and publications such as a biennial
Guide to Historic Sites in Southern Indiana and
Teachers' Resource Guide for Historic Sites. Copies
of lesson and unit plans from previous workshops on
'nearby history" are available by mail. Working
with Project Athena, HSI has developed three
interactive classroom projects, with videos, based
on three major historic communities/sites. Contact
HSI for dditional information on programs and
services and their availability.
