Resource Library

The Center for Historic Preservation maintains a collection of publications (journals, magazines, books, brochures), research files, microfiche, microfilm, photographs, slides, audio-visuals, and maps to support research on a variety of preservation related subjects from circa 1700 through the present.  Topics include: African-American history, agriculture, architecture, cemeteries, Civil War, cultural resource management, decorative arts, heritage education, heritage tourism, historic preservation, material culture, museums, Tennessee history, and U. S. history.  Since 1984, the Center for Historic Preservation has produced hundreds of historic structure reports, museum interpretation recommendations, heritage education plans, National Register nominations, and ongoing survey and documentation project files.

Resources generated by the Center and not generally available in libraries or archives include:

  • Tennessee Century Farms Program
Files include application forms, deeds, histories, photographs and/or slides for over 400 farms in Tennessee. More complete documentation is available for farms listed in the National Register of Historic Places under the Historic Family Farms of middle Tennessee, 1780-1960 Multiple Property nomination.  The CHP continues to update existing files and add new farms to the collection.
  • Tennessee Civil War National Heritage Area
Most research produced in connection with the Heritage Area will be on the TCWNHA website.   The Center will retain photographs, unpublished manuscripts, and research materials.
  • Tennessee Rural African-American Church Project
Files contain survey forms, site plans, histories, notes, and photographs and/or slides for over 300 Tennessee churches.  More complete documentation is available for churches listed in the National Register of Historic Places under the Rural African-American Churches in Tennessee Multiple Property Nominations.  The CHP continues to update existing files and add new churches to the collection.
  • Tennessee Slave Housing Survey Project
Files contain field notes, architectural descriptions, photographs, and/or slides for over 50 sites. The CHP continues to update existing files and add new sites to the collection.
  • Historic Structures Reports
Documentation of CHP projects across Tennessee and surrounding states sometimes includes maps and blueprints as well as photographs and histories.
  • Theses and Dissertations
Center staff have guided nearly one hundred students to completing their M.A. thesis in history, historic preservation, and public history.
  • National Register of Historic Places Nominations
Center staff have directed to completion over two hundred individual, district, and multiple property nominations to the National Register of Historic Places, the country's lists of buildings, places, and sites worthy of preservation.
