About Us
The
Center for Historic Preservation is a research and public service
institute committed to the preservation, protection, enhancement,
and sensitive promotion of our historic environment. With the
resources of a university and a network of state and local partners,
the Center follows a dual mission of improving higher education in
Tennessee Board of Regents Universities and expanding the state's
economic opportunities through historic preservation and heritage
development programs and activities.
A Center of Excellence at
Middle Tennessee State University, funded by the General Assembly
and the University, the Center's primary responsibility is to serve
Tennessee's 95 counties. The Center provides services in every
county of Tennessee through such statewide projects as the
Tennessee Century Farms program, the
Tennessee Civil War National Heritage Area, and the
Tennessee Iron Furnace Trail
program.
Recognized nationally
and internationally for its innovative approaches and partnerships
to further heritage development, the Center administers the
Heritage Development Institute and was the local host of the
International Heritage Development Conference held in Nashville
in June 2005.
The Center for Historic
Preservation supports undergraduate and graduate education and
student-centered learning through fellowships, graduate research
assistantships, and other employment options. Staff-directed
projects provide interdisciplinary and applied working experiences.
Students interested in applied experience training are encouraged to
apply for
academic
support.
The Center welcomes requests from communities, individuals,
agencies, and organizations--both governmental and
not-for-profit--that are working toward historic preservation goals.
