Caneta Hankins, Projects Coordinator since the Center’s establishment in 1984, focuses on heritage education in K-12 and the documentation and preservation or rural resources. A long-time advocate of using community heritage resources in the classroom, Hankins has developed curriculum materials on a variety of topics, published articles and teaching guides, and presented heritage education workshops across the United States and in England, France, and Ireland. She directs The Heritage Education Network (THEN), a national web site for teachers and is currently coordinating a national survey project, funded in part by the National Center for Preservation Technology and Training, on heritage education in teacher training programs in higher education. Hankins is also the director of the Tennessee Century Farms Program, an ongoing statewide documentary and recognition project administered by the Center since 1984. In addition to expanding and maintaining this research collection of nearly 1000 family farms, Hankins authored a 2003 publication featuring Rutherford County’s Century Farms and is currently at work on a similar publication for Dickson County. Her article on Hugh Rogan of Counties Donegal and Sumner: Irish Acculturation in Frontier Tennessee was published in the Tennessee Historical Quarterly and in Tennessee History: The Land, the People, and the Culture (UT Press, 1998) as well as the Donegal Journal (Ireland, 2001). She also published articles on varied topics in numerous journals and periodicals and wrote the text for Hearthstones: The Story of Rutherford County Homes (1994). At the Center, Hankins works
with all Center and Heritage Area staff and graduate
assistants on a wide range of projects including
feasibility studies, publications, workshop and
conference planning and implementation, and grant
preparation. |
