The antebellum N&NW, originally intended to connect Nashville with the Mississippi River at Hickman, Kentucky, was incomplete when the Civil War began. The eastern portion had only been completed from Nashville to Kingston Springs, while the western portion ran from Hickman, Kentucky, to McKenzie, Tennessee. USMRR completed the eastern portion to Johnsonville on the Tennessee River, where a substantial Federal supply depot was developed. The remaining gap was not completed until after the war. (Note that USMRR provided mileages from Nashville for many of the items in the listing.)
