US MILITARY RAILROADS:  WESTERN & ATLANTIC

Although the Western & Atlantic connected the critical rail centers of Chattanooga and Atlanta (GA), only a very small portion of the line actually ran through Tennessee.  Nevertheless, the W&A was the scene of much military action during Sherman's Atlanta campaign.  The famous Andrews Raid occurred on the W&A in north Georgia--the stolen locomotive General was recaptured by the Confederates before it crossed the Tennessee line on its way to Chattanooga.
