US MILITARY RAILROADS:  NASHVILLE & CLARKSVILLE

The Nashville and Clarksville (61 miles long) was assembled by the USMRR from three pre-existing antebellum lines:  the first link (antebellum tackage shared between the L&N and the E&K) ran from Nashville to Edgefield Junction (10 miles); the second link (consisting of antebellum E&K trackage) ran from Edgefield Junction to the Kentucky state line (37 miles); and the third link ("Clarksville extension," a part of the antebellum Memphis, Clarksville & Louisville) ran from the Kentucky state line to Clarksville (14 miles).  The Nashville and Clarksville provided a rail connection between Clarksville (a port further down the Cumberland River) and Nashville (a critical logistical center dependent on both river and rail traffic), thus allowing a backup delivery route for critically needed Federal supplies.
